Which poet is known as 'the haiku master of the common people'?

The story behind the answer

Kobayashi Issa is widely known as the “haiku master of the common people.” His poems often focus on farmers, children, insects, poverty, illness, grief, and other ordinary experiences, giving his work an unusually intimate and accessible voice.

Issa was born in 1763 in Kashiwabara, in present-day Nagano Prefecture. He experienced hardship from childhood, including the loss of his mother and conflict with his stepmother. Much of his later life was marked by poverty and repeated personal tragedy, including the deaths of several children.

Unlike the more austere image often associated with Bashō or the painterly refinement associated with Buson, Issa frequently wrote with plain language, humor, tenderness, and compassion. His famous poems about small creatures—especially sparrows, snails, and fleas—treat humble lives as worthy of attention.

The phrase “master of the common people” is a standard descriptive epithet, not an official title. Other poets, including Bashō, also wrote about everyday life, but Issa is the canonical answer because ordinary people and overlooked creatures are central to his poetic identity.
