Amanda Gorman co-chaired the 2021 Met Gala and wore a blue dress inspired by the United States Constitution.
Gorman is an American poet and activist who became widely known after reciting “The Hill We Climb” at the 2021 inauguration of President Joe Biden. At the Met Gala later that year, she wore a cobalt-blue Vera Wang gown and carried a clutch shaped like a book. The outfit was designed to evoke the Constitution.
The look matched the 2021 gala’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which invited guests to interpret American identity through clothing. Gorman’s ensemble used a literary and civic reference rather than a purely historical costume.
Gorman co-chaired the event with Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, and Naomi Osaka. The gala was delayed from its normal May date and held in September because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her appearance combined poetry, politics, literature, and fashion in a way that closely reflected the event’s theme.
