Which poem by Hesiod tells the full story of Pandora opening her container?
Answer
Works and Days
Answer
Works and Days
Hesiod’s Works and Days tells the full story of Pandora opening her container.
Works and Days is a Greek didactic poem combining advice about farming, justice, labor, and proper conduct. Within that broader work, Hesiod explains why suffering and difficult labor affect human life after the arrival of Pandora.
The poem presents Pandora as part of Zeus’s response to Prometheus’s theft of fire. Zeus orders her creation and sends her to Epimetheus, whose acceptance brings the sealed container into humanity’s story.
The Theogony discusses the creation of woman and the consequences of Prometheus’s deception, but it does not give the same complete container-opening episode. That is why Works and Days is the key primary source for the familiar myth.
