Which playwright wrote the 1904 play titled Pandora's Box, later adapted by Pabst?
Answer
Frank Wedekind
Answer
Frank Wedekind
Frank Wedekind wrote the 1904 play titled Pandora's Box, later adapted by Pabst.
Wedekind's Pandora's Box is the second major play in his Lulu cycle, following Earth Spirit. It continues the story of Lulu, whose relationships expose the tensions between sexual desire, social respectability, and male control.
The play premiered in 1904 and was controversial because of its frank treatment of sexuality and its refusal to make Lulu fit a simple moral category. G. W. Pabst drew on Pandora's Box and Earth Spirit for his celebrated 1929 film, starring Louise Brooks.
The title deliberately invokes the Greek mythological container, but Wedekind's drama is a modern European work. Its Pandora image is metaphorical: Lulu's presence seems to release destructive forces in the lives around her, rather than reproducing the ancient story's characters and plot.
