Which playwright created Lulu, the central character adapted in Pandora’s Box?

The story behind the answer

Frank Wedekind created Lulu, the central character adapted in Pandora’s Box. Lulu first appeared in Wedekind’s linked dramas Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box, written in the late nineteenth century.

Wedekind’s Lulu plays challenged conventional ideas about sexuality, respectability, gender, and bourgeois society. The character’s relationships and the destructive reactions they provoke form the basis of the later film directed by G. W. Pabst.

Wedekind was a German playwright, actor, and cabaret performer. His work influenced expressionist theater and later filmmakers, composers, and writers. Alban Berg adapted the Lulu material into the opera Lulu, which premiered posthumously in 1937.

The name Pandora’s Box can cause confusion because Wedekind’s play and Pabst’s film use the Greek myth as an allusion rather than retelling the ancient story. Lulu is not Pandora; she is Wedekind’s own modern dramatic creation.
