Which playwright created Lulu in the plays later adapted as Pandora's Box?

The story behind the answer

Frank Wedekind created Lulu in the plays later adapted as Pandora's Box.

Wedekind developed Lulu across Earth Spirit, first performed in 1895, and Pandora's Box, first performed in 1904. Together, the plays form the core of what is often called the Lulu cycle. Their provocative treatment of sexuality, social hypocrisy, and power made them controversial in German-speaking theatre.

G. W. Pabst's 1929 film Pandora's Box combines material from both plays. The film made Lulu internationally famous through Louise Brooks's performance, but the character and her dramatic world came from Wedekind.

Wedekind was a German playwright, actor, and cabaret performer associated with theatrical modernism. His works challenged conventional morality and censorship. The title Pandora's Box therefore operates on two levels: it names one of Wedekind's plays and evokes the older Greek image of a release that cannot be undone.
