Which PlayStation platform game starred Pac-Man in 1999?

The story behind the answer

Which PlayStation platform game starred Pac-Man in 1999? Pac-Man World is the canonical answer.

Namco released Pac-Man World for the original PlayStation in North America on October 15, 1999, as part of Pac-Man’s 20th-anniversary celebrations. It is a 3D platform game in which Pac-Man travels across Ghost Island to rescue family members kidnapped by Toc-Man, a villain claiming to be the real Pac-Man.

The game began as a very different prototype called Pac-Man Ghost Zone, an open-world-style project shown at E3 in 1997. After Namco rejected that version, designer Scott Rogers and a smaller team reshaped it around colorful platforming, classic Pac-Man mechanics, and recognizable series imagery. The final game contains six themed worlds, boss battles, bonus mazes, fruit, power pellets, and the letter-collecting challenge that spells PACMAN.

A common mix-up is Pac-Man World Re-Pac, the 2022 remake, or Pac-Man World 2, the 2002 sequel. The 1999 original is specifically the PlayStation game titled Pac-Man World.
