Which player was the top try scorer at the 2019 Rugby World Cup?

The story behind the answer

Josh Adams was the top try scorer at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, crossing the line seven times for Wales. He scored four tries against Fiji in the pool stage, then added tries against Uruguay, France and South Africa.

Adams was a Wales winger whose finishing made him one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacking players. His four-try performance against Fiji was especially important: Wales won 29–17 and secured a place in the knockout stage. He also scored the Welsh try in their 19–16 semi-final defeat by South Africa.

The tournament’s overall leading try scorer was not New Zealand’s Jonah Lomu, who played in the 1990s, nor Bryan Habana, who retired after the 2015 World Cup. South Africa’s Makazole Mapimpi was also prolific in 2019, but finished behind Adams with six tries.

Adams’s total was a personal milestone as well as a tournament record for the event. Wales ultimately reached the semi-final, where South Africa edged them out with a late Handré Pollard penalty before defeating England in the final.
