Which player defeated Roger Federer in the 2013 Wimbledon second round?
Answer
Sergiy Stakhovsky
Answer
Sergiy Stakhovsky
Sergiy Stakhovsky defeated Roger Federer in the second round of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships.
The Ukrainian qualifier and world No. 116 won a dramatic four-set match 6–7(5), 7–6(5), 7–5, 7–6(5). Stakhovsky repeatedly attacked the net, using serve-and-volley tennis to disrupt Federer’s rhythm on Centre Court.
The upset was especially surprising because Federer was the defending champion and had won Wimbledon seven times. It also ended his run of 36 consecutive appearances in a Grand Slam quarterfinal or better, a streak stretching back to the 2004 French Open.
Federer’s defeat was his earliest Wimbledon exit since 2002. Stakhovsky’s victory became the defining result of his career, while Federer later recovered enough in 2013 to win the Halle title and finish the season ranked sixth in the world.
