Which platform originally hosted Pokémon Red and Green?
Answer
Game Boy
Answer
Game Boy
Pokémon Red and Green were originally released for the Game Boy.
Nintendo’s monochrome handheld provided the technical foundation for the first Pokémon games. Its Link Cable allowed two players to connect separate systems, making it possible to trade Pokémon and battle one another. That communication feature was central to the franchise’s design rather than a minor extra.
The original Japanese games launched in 1996 on the standard Game Boy. Pokémon Yellow later supported the Game Boy Color’s enhanced palette, but Red and Green began on the earlier hardware. International Red and Blue also launched for the Game Boy, preserving the core experience for players outside Japan.
The Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance are easy alternatives to confuse with the original platform because later Pokémon games and remakes used them. Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal were associated with the Game Boy Color, while FireRed and LeafGreen were Game Boy Advance remakes of the first games.
