Which plant species produces the spice nutmeg from its seed?

The story behind the answer

Myristica fragrans produces nutmeg from its seed.

Myristica fragrans is an evergreen tree native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia. Its fruit splits open when ripe, revealing a dark seed surrounded by a bright red, net-like covering called an aril. The dried seed is nutmeg, while the dried aril is the separate spice called mace.

The Banda Islands became central to the early modern spice trade because nutmeg was once found naturally only there. European powers fought for control of the islands and their valuable spice trees, making nutmeg part of a much larger history of colonial commerce.

Nutmeg and mace come from the same fruit but are not the same plant part. The seed is grated or ground, whereas mace is made from the aril wrapped around it.
