Which plant is known for its leaves that fold when touched? Mimosa pudica is the famous sensitive plant whose leaves fold inward after contact.

This tropical legume, also called the touch-me-not or shameplant, has compound leaves made of many small leaflets. When touched, shaken, blown, or otherwise stimulated, the leaflets close and the whole leaf droops. The movement is driven by changes in water pressure inside swollen structures called pulvini at the bases of the leaflets and leaf stalks.

The response is known as seismonastic movement and may help discourage herbivores by making the plant appear wilted or exposing its prickly stem. Closing also reduces photosynthesis temporarily, so the reaction costs the plant energy. Mimosa pudica closes its foliage at night as well, but that daily rhythm is a different movement called nyctinasty.

Venus flytraps also respond rapidly to touch, but their trigger hairs close a trap designed to capture insects. Sundews use sticky glandular hairs, and pitcher plants rely on slippery, fluid-filled traps; none has Mimosa pudica’s characteristic touch-folding leaves.
