Which plant family contains roses, apples, strawberries, and cherries?

The story behind the answer

Roses, apples, strawberries, and cherries all belong to the plant family Rosaceae.

Rosaceae, commonly called the rose family, is a large flowering-plant family containing thousands of species. Its members include ornamental plants such as roses, economically important fruit trees such as apples and peaches, and herbaceous plants such as strawberries.

The family is diverse in form, ranging from herbs to shrubs and trees. Many members have flowers with five petals and five sepals, although floral structures vary considerably. The family also includes several different fruit types, which is why its members do not all look alike or produce the same kind of fruit.

Strawberries are a frequent source of confusion: the fleshy part is an accessory fruit, while the tiny surface “seeds” are individual achenes. Apples and pears are also accessory fruits. Rosaceae is therefore defined by shared botanical relationships, not by one single fruit shape or growth habit.
