Which plant family contains both sundews and the Venus flytrap?

The story behind the answer

Which plant family contains both sundews and the Venus flytrap? Droseraceae is the family that includes both.

Droseraceae is a family of carnivorous flowering plants containing the large sundew genus Drosera, the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), and the aquatic waterwheel plant (Aldrovanda vesiculosa). Most of its roughly 180–200 species are sundews, but the family’s three living genera show strikingly different traps.

Sundews use sticky, gland-tipped hairs to catch prey, while the Venus flytrap closes a snap trap when trigger hairs are stimulated. The waterwheel plant has a similar snap mechanism underwater. These differences can cause confusion: pitcher plants such as Nepenthes and Sarracenia are also carnivorous, but they belong to other families.

The family name comes from Drosera, derived from the Greek word for “dewy,” referring to the glistening mucilage on sundew leaves. Droseraceae is placed in the order Caryophyllales, and molecular evidence supports the close relationship of its three modern genera. The family occurs on every continent except Antarctica.
