Which planned operation would have invaded the Kantō Plain near Tokyo after Operation Olympic?
Answer
Operation Coronet
Answer
Operation Coronet
Operation Coronet was the planned invasion of the Kantō Plain near Tokyo after Operation Olympic.
Coronet formed the second stage of Operation Downfall. It was tentatively scheduled for March 1, 1946, after Olympic had established Allied positions and airfields on southern Kyūshū. The objective was to land on the Kantō Plain, the broad region surrounding Tokyo.
The proposed operation was expected to be larger than Olympic. American forces planned landings near Kujūkuri Beach on the Bōsō Peninsula and near Hiratsuka on Sagami Bay. The assault would then drive inland toward Tokyo and encircle the capital.
Coronet was never launched. Japan's surrender in August 1945 canceled the entire Downfall plan. This distinction matters because Olympic and Coronet were separate planned operations, while Downfall was the overall invasion concept encompassing both.
