Which planned operation would have invaded southern Kyushu in November 1945?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the planned invasion of southern Kyushu in November 1945. It was the first major phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of Japan's home islands.
The operation was scheduled for 1 November 1945, designated X-Day. Allied planners intended to seize the southern third of Kyushu, establish airfields, and use the island as a base for the later invasion of Honshu. Okinawa was expected to serve as a major staging area for the operation.
The projected force was immense. Plans called for more than 700,000 personnel in the initial commitment, supported by hundreds of thousands of additional troops and a vast naval force. The invasion fleet was expected to include dozens of aircraft carriers, battleships, and destroyers.
Olympic was canceled after Japan accepted surrender terms in August. It is sometimes confused with Coronet, but Coronet was the planned second phase against the Kanto Plain near Tokyo. Operation Ketsugo was the Japanese defensive strategy, not an Allied invasion operation.
