Which planned operation was intended to invade Honshu near Tokyo in 1946?

The story behind the answer

Operation Coronet was the planned operation intended to invade Honshu near Tokyo in 1946.

Coronet was the second phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of Japan. Its objective was the Kantō Plain, the broad area surrounding Tokyo on Japan’s largest main island, Honshu. The operation was tentatively scheduled to begin on March 1, 1946.

The plan envisioned landings on beaches including Kujūkuri Beach and areas near Sagami Bay. Large American forces would then advance inland toward Tokyo. Coronet was expected to be even larger than Operation Olympic, the earlier phase planned for southern Kyushu.

Japan’s surrender made Coronet unnecessary. The operation should not be confused with Operation Downfall itself: Downfall was the overall invasion plan, while Coronet was its proposed second stage. It is also unrelated to Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of French North Africa in 1942. The planned battle for Honshu therefore remains a historical contingency rather than an actual campaign.
