Which planned Operation Downfall phase targeted the Japanese island of Kyushu?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the planned Operation Downfall phase targeting Kyushu.
Olympic was designed to capture the southern third of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island. The operation was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945, using Okinawa as a major staging area. Captured airfields and territory in Kyushu would then have supported the later phase of the invasion plan.
The second phase, Operation Coronet, was intended for the Kantō Plain near Tokyo on Honshu. Together, Olympic and Coronet formed Operation Downfall, the overall Allied plan for invading Japan’s home islands. Japan’s surrender in August canceled both operations.
Allied planners expected strong resistance on Kyushu. Japanese military leaders had developed their own defensive plan, Operation Ketsugō, anticipating that an invasion would be met with a concentrated national defense. Because Olympic never occurred, its projected troop levels and casualty estimates remain planning figures rather than battle results.
