Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the planned Operation Downfall phase targeting southern Kyūshū in November 1945.
Olympic was designed as the first stage of the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands. Allied forces intended to seize the southern third of Kyūshū, Japan’s southernmost main island, and use captured airfields to support the later invasion of the Kantō Plain near Tokyo.
The operation was scheduled for November 1, 1945, and would have involved a very large naval and ground force. Its planned assault beaches were given automobile-related names, including Austin, Buick, Cadillac, and Zephyr. Operation Coronet was intended to follow in spring 1946.
Olympic was never carried out because Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration and formally surrendered. It is often confused with Operation Iceberg, the codename for the Okinawa invasion, and with Operation Pastel, a proposed deception plan connected to the Downfall planning process.
