Which planned 1946 operation would have invaded Japan's Kanto Plain near Tokyo?
Answer
Operation Coronet
Answer
Operation Coronet
Operation Coronet was the planned 1946 invasion of Japan's Kanto Plain near Tokyo.
It was the second major stage of Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of the Japanese home islands. Coronet was tentatively scheduled to begin on March 1, 1946, after Operation Olympic had invaded southern Kyushu in November 1945.
The plan called for Allied forces to land on beaches around the Kanto Plain, including areas near Sagami Bay and the Boso Peninsula. The objective was to seize the region surrounding Tokyo and force the defeat of the Japanese government and armed forces.
Operation Coronet was never launched because Japan surrendered in August 1945. Its name is sometimes mixed up with Operation Olympic, which was the planned invasion of Kyushu, or with Operation Downfall, the umbrella name for both operations. If carried out, Coronet would have required an enormous force, including up to 45 American divisions assigned to the initial landing and follow-up operations.
