Which planned 1945 operation would have invaded southern Kyushu as part of Operation Downfall?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the planned Allied invasion of southern Kyushu in November 1945.
Olympic formed the first phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands. Its objective was to seize the southern part of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, and establish positions for later operations.
The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for Honshu and would have targeted the Kantō Plain near Tokyo. Olympic and Coronet therefore referred to different stages and landing areas, not interchangeable names for the entire invasion plan.
Olympic was never launched. Japan surrendered in August 1945, after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet Union’s entry into the war against Japan. The cancellation prevented the projected invasion from becoming a real campaign, so the operation is known through military plans, schedules, and projected force requirements rather than combat results.
