Which planned 1945 operation targeted southern Kyūshū in the proposed invasion of Japan?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was the planned 1945 Allied invasion of southern Kyūshū.

Olympic formed the first stage of Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands. The landing was scheduled for November 1, 1945, and its objective was to seize the southern part of Kyūshū, Japan’s southernmost main island. Allied planners intended to use captured airfields there to support a later attack on Honshū.

The plan assigned major American forces to the operation and envisioned Okinawa as a staging base. The proposed naval armada included 42 aircraft carriers, 24 battleships, and about 400 destroyers and destroyer escorts. The scale reflected the expectation of fierce Japanese resistance.

Olympic was canceled when Japan surrendered in August 1945. Operation Coronet, the second stage of Downfall, would have attacked the Kantō Plain near Tokyo in 1946. Operation Ketsugō was not an Allied operation; it was Japan’s planned defense against the invasion.
