Saturn is the planet whose moon Pandora helps shepherd the F ring.
Pandora is a small irregular satellite orbiting Saturn near the planet’s outer ring system. Along with Prometheus, it exerts gravitational influence on the narrow and braided F ring. Pandora orbits outside the ring, while Prometheus orbits inside it, so the pair is often described as shepherd moons.
Voyager 1 photographed Pandora during its 1980 encounter with Saturn, providing the observations that established the moon’s existence. Its surface is marked by craters and it has a notably irregular shape, characteristics shared by many small outer satellites.
The name can create confusion with other uses of Pandora, including the Greek myth and the fictional world in Avatar. In astronomy, the plain name Pandora in this context refers to Saturn’s natural satellite. It is not one of Jupiter’s Galilean moons, nor is it a moon of Uranus or Neptune.
