Which planet is visited in C.S. Lewis's second Space Trilogy novel, Perelandra?

The story behind the answer

Perelandra is the planet visited in C.S. Lewis's second Space Trilogy novel, Perelandra.

The novel was published in 1943 and follows philologist Elwin Ransom after he is sent to another world. In the story’s terminology, Perelandra is the planet known to Earth as Venus, although Lewis gives it a distinct fictional environment and spiritual history.

The first Space Trilogy novel, Out of the Silent Planet, takes Ransom to Malacandra, the fictional name for Mars. The third novel, That Hideous Strength, returns primarily to Earth. Keeping those planetary settings separate prevents a common mix-up between Malacandra and Perelandra.

Perelandra combines speculative fiction with theological and philosophical themes. Its plot echoes the temptation narrative in Genesis while presenting an unfallen world whose inhabitants face a decisive moral test.
