Which pigeon is the largest living pigeon species and inhabits New Guinea’s tropical forests?
Answer
Victoria crowned pigeon
Answer
Victoria crowned pigeon
The Victoria crowned pigeon is the largest living pigeon species and inhabits the lowland forests of New Guinea and nearby islands.
It is named after Queen Victoria and is recognizable by its blue-grey body, red eyes, maroon breast, and elaborate lace-like crest. Adults can weigh more than 2 kilograms, making the bird far larger than familiar city pigeons.
Unlike many pigeons, it usually walks on the forest floor, where it eats fallen fruit, seeds, and other plant material. It can fly strongly but often relies on walking when foraging.
The species is related to the western and southern crowned pigeons. Hunting and the wild bird trade have reduced some populations, while forest loss threatens its island habitats.
