Stephen Hawking gave his name to the black-hole radiation predicted in 1974. Hawking radiation is thermal, or black-body, radiation that quantum theory predicts should be emitted near a black hole’s event horizon.
The prediction challenged the classical picture that nothing associated with a black hole could escape. Hawking applied quantum field theory in curved spacetime and showed that black holes should have a temperature and gradually lose mass and rotational energy. The effect is also linked to Jacob Bekenstein’s earlier work on black-hole entropy, so it is sometimes called Bekenstein–Hawking radiation.
A common misconception is that Hawking radiation means ordinary objects simply fly out from inside the event horizon. The theory instead describes quantum effects outside and around the horizon. For stellar and supermassive black holes, the predicted radiation is extraordinarily faint; smaller black holes would be hotter and evaporate much faster.
