Answer
Victor Jorgensen
Victor Jorgensen took the alternate V-J Day kiss photograph published by The New York Times.
Jorgensen was a U.S. Navy photojournalist who photographed the same Times Square encounter as Alfred Eisenstaedt, but from a different angle. His image was published in The New York Times on the following day under the title “Kissing the War Goodbye.”
Unlike Eisenstaedt’s famous composition, Jorgensen’s photograph shows less of Times Square and is darker. It nevertheless provides useful visual details about the setting, including the front of the Chemical Bank and Trust building and a Walgreens sign.
Jorgensen’s image was created by a federal government employee performing official duties, so it entered the public domain. Eisenstaedt’s photograph, made for Life, had a different copyright status. The two images are often confused because they depict the same brief embrace on 14 August 1945.
