Which photographer introduced Georgia O'Keeffe to the New York art world?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz introduced Georgia O'Keeffe to the New York art world.

Stieglitz, a pioneering photographer and gallery owner, first saw some of O'Keeffe’s abstract charcoal drawings in 1916. He exhibited them at his New York gallery, 291, without her initial permission, beginning a professional relationship that profoundly changed her career.

The pair began corresponding and met in person in 1918. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, and those photographs helped establish her public image as a major modern artist. They married in 1924 and remained together until Stieglitz’s death in 1946.

Stieglitz is sometimes remembered only as a photographer, but his galleries were equally important to American modernism. He promoted European and American artists, including Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Arthur Dove. O'Keeffe’s relationship with him was both personal and professional, although she maintained an independent artistic identity throughout her career.
