The photo-sharing app launched in October 2010 and acquired by Facebook in 2012 was Instagram.
Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and began as a location-based check-in app called Burbn. They simplified the idea around photo sharing, launched Instagram for Apple's iPhone on October 6, 2010, and quickly attracted users with square photos and built-in filters.
Facebook announced its agreement to acquire Instagram in April 2012 for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. The deal closed later that year, but Instagram continued operating as a separate app. A common mix-up is confusing Instagram with Snapchat or Vine: both became prominent in the same decade, but neither was the photo-sharing service acquired by Facebook in 2012. Pinterest was also launched earlier, in 2010, but has a different visual bookmarking model.
