Which Philadelphia soul producers formed the songwriting team Gamble and Huff?

The story behind the answer

Which Philadelphia soul producers formed the songwriting team Gamble and Huff? They were Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. The two Philadelphia musicians became one of popular music’s most influential songwriting and production partnerships, helping define the polished, orchestral “Philly soul” sound of the 1970s.

Gamble, born in Philadelphia in 1943, and Huff, born in Camden, New Jersey, wrote and produced songs for numerous artists. Their work emphasized lush strings, prominent horns, danceable grooves, and socially aware lyrics. In 1971, they founded Philadelphia International Records, a label that became a major home for soul acts including the O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, and McFadden & Whitehead.

Their catalog includes “Love Train,” “For the Love of Money,” “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” and “Me and Mrs. Jones.” Rodgers and Edwards refers to another songwriting partnership, while Ashford and Simpson and Holland–Dozier–Holland were separate teams associated with Motown-era and soul music. Gamble and Huff were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
