Independence Hall was the principal meeting place of the Second Continental Congress in 1776.
The building in Philadelphia was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress used it during the Revolutionary War, and delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence there on July 4, 1776. The Constitutional Convention also met in the building in 1787.
The name Independence Hall became common later; during the founding era, the building was generally called the Pennsylvania State House. That distinction explains why historical sources may use two names for the same landmark.
Independence Hall is often confused with nearby Congress Hall, where the federal Congress met from 1790 to 1800, and Carpenters' Hall, which hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774. The building is now part of Independence National Historical Park.
