The structure was originally called the Pennsylvania State House. Completed in the 18th century, it became the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress, where delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The Constitutional Convention also met there in 1787.

Independence Hall is often confused with nearby Carpenters' Hall, where the First Continental Congress met in 1774, or Congress Hall, where the U.S. Congress met in the 1790s. Those buildings are also associated with the park, but they are not the answer to this question.

The National Park Service established Independence National Historical Park to preserve Philadelphia sites connected with the American Revolution and the founding of the United States. Independence Hall became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
