Independence Hall is the Philadelphia building where the Declaration of Independence was adopted.
The building, originally called the Pennsylvania State House, hosted the Second Continental Congress in 1776. Delegates debated independence there and adopted the Declaration on July 4. The same building later hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787.
Its dual connection to the Declaration and the Constitution makes Independence Hall one of the central historic sites associated with America250. It stands in Independence National Historical Park and is preserved as a National Historic Landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visitors sometimes confuse Independence Hall with the Liberty Bell Center. The Liberty Bell is displayed nearby, but it is not the building where Congress adopted the Declaration. Independence Hall is also different from Carpenters’ Hall, where the First Continental Congress met in 1774.
