Which Philadelphia building hosted the 1787 convention that drafted the U.S. Constitution?

The story behind the answer

Independence Hall hosted the 1787 convention that drafted the United States Constitution.

The building stands in Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park. It was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House and later became associated with two defining events in U.S. history: the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence there in 1776, and the Constitutional Convention met there in 1787.

Delegates met from May 25 through September 17, 1787, behind closed doors. George Washington presided over the convention, which replaced the Articles of Confederation with a stronger federal framework. The delegates signed the completed Constitution on September 17.

The building was originally called the Pennsylvania State House; “Independence Hall” became its better-known name in the 19th century. Federal Hall in New York hosted the first U.S. Congress under the Constitution, while Congress Hall in Philadelphia later served as the national capitol during the city’s period as temporary capital.
