Independence Hall in Philadelphia hosted the 1787 Constitutional Convention.
The building was originally called the Pennsylvania State House. It had already become associated with the Revolution because the Second Continental Congress met there and adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
From May 25 to September 17, 1787, delegates met inside Independence Hall for the Constitutional Convention. Although they were initially asked to consider changes to the Articles of Confederation, they ultimately drafted an entirely new Constitution.
The building’s name can cause confusion because “Congress Hall” is a separate adjacent building. Congress Hall served as the national capitol in Philadelphia from 1790 to 1800, while Federal Hall in New York City hosted the first United States Congress and George Washington’s first inauguration. Independence Hall is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
