Independence Hall hosted Congress when it adopted the Declaration of Independence commemorated by America250.
The building stood in Philadelphia as the Pennsylvania State House when the Second Continental Congress met there. Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, making the building one of the central locations in the America250 story.
The structure later became known as Independence Hall because of its connection to the founding of the United States. It also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, where delegates drafted the United States Constitution. That dual role makes the building important to both the Declaration and the later creation of the federal government.
Independence Hall is frequently confused with Federal Hall in New York City, where George Washington was inaugurated as the first president in 1789. Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, but it was not the site where the Declaration was adopted.
