Which phase of Operation Downfall targeted the Kantō Plain near Tokyo?

The story behind the answer

Operation Coronet was the phase of Operation Downfall that targeted the Kantō Plain near Tokyo.

Coronet was planned for spring 1946, after Operation Olympic’s proposed landing in southern Kyūshū. The Kantō Plain lies on Honshū, Japan’s largest main island, and includes Tokyo. Capturing this region would have placed Allied forces against Japan’s political and population center.

The overall Downfall plan was never executed because Japan surrendered in August 1945. The projected invasion therefore remains a study in military planning rather than a completed campaign. Allied leaders expected major resistance, and the Japanese military prepared its own defense strategy, known as Operation Ketsugō.

Coronet is often confused with Olympic because both were parts of Downfall. Olympic concerned Kyūshū; Coronet concerned the Kantō Plain. The names also differ from Operation Overlord, the code name for the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944. Japan’s surrender eliminated the need for both planned invasion phases.
