Which pharaoh built the second largest pyramid at Giza?
Answer
Khafre
Answer
Khafre
Pharaoh Khafre built the second-largest pyramid at Giza, now known as the Pyramid of Khafre.
Khafre was a Fourth-Dynasty ruler and the son of Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid. His pyramid was designed as the centre of a complete funerary complex containing a mortuary temple, a long causeway, a valley temple, and probably the nearby Great Sphinx complex.
Although it is smaller in volume than Khufu’s pyramid, Khafre’s monument can look taller in photographs. It was built on higher ground, has a steeper slope, and still preserves some of its original polished Tura limestone casing near the summit. Its original height was about 143.5 metres; today it rises to roughly 136.4 metres.
Khufu is the tempting alternative because his pyramid is the largest at Giza, while Menkaure built the smallest. Djoser is another frequent confusion, but his Step Pyramid stands at Saqqara and predates the Giza pyramids by several generations.
