Which perfumer created the formula for Chanel No. 5?

The story behind the answer

Ernest Beaux created the formula for Chanel No. 5.

Beaux was a French-Russian perfumer who worked with Coco Chanel in the early 1920s. He presented her with a series of numbered samples, and Chanel selected the fifth sample, helping give the fragrance its famous name.

The perfume was launched in 1921 and became one of the most commercially successful and recognizable fragrances in the world. Its composition used aldehydes prominently, helping create an abstract, expansive scent rather than one based on a single flower.

Coco Chanel gave the fragrance its fashion identity and name, but Ernest Beaux was the perfumer responsible for the formula. François Coty and Jean Patou were important figures in French fragrance history, but neither created Chanel No. 5.
