Adulis stood on the Gulf of Zula, about 40 kilometres south of Massawa, on Eritrea’s Red Sea coast. Its position gave it access to maritime routes linking the Horn of Africa with southern Arabia, Egypt, the eastern Mediterranean, India and, indirectly, the wider Indian Ocean trading world. Archaeologists have found imported pottery, glass, coins and other evidence of long-distance commerce.

Adulis was an important port of the Kingdom of Aksum, especially between late antiquity and the early medieval period. Excavations also revealed remains beneath the better-known ancient city, indicating occupation dating back to the mid-second or early first millennium BCE. The site is therefore more than a single-period ruin: it preserves layers of Red Sea settlement and trade.

A common mix-up is confusing the Buri Peninsula with Massawa itself. Massawa is the modern port city farther north, while Adulis lies near the head of the Gulf of Zula on the Buri Peninsula.
