Which penguin species is the tallest and heaviest living penguin?

The story behind the answer

The emperor penguin is the tallest and heaviest living penguin species.

Adult emperors usually stand about 100–ซ120 centimetres tall and weigh roughly 22–45 kilograms, with males and females similar in size. Their large bodies reduce heat loss in Antarctica, while dense feathers and a thick layer of fat provide insulation.

Emperor penguins breed during the Antarctic winter. After the female lays a single egg, the male balances it on his feet and covers it with a brood pouch while she travels to sea to feed. The male may fast for around two months.

The king penguin is a common mix-up because it is also tall and has bright orange markings, but it is smaller. Emperor penguins are also distinct from all other penguins because their breeding cycle is closely tied to the darkest, coldest season.
