Which payments company was founded in 1958 as BankAmericard and later became Visa?

The story behind the answer

Visa was founded in 1958 as BankAmericard before adopting the Visa name.

Bank of America launched BankAmericard in California in 1958. The card program expanded beyond the bank and was eventually managed through a network of member financial institutions. In 1976, the international organization adopted the name Visa, creating a brand intended to work across languages and national markets.

Visa generally operates a payments network rather than lending directly to cardholders. Banks and other institutions issue Visa-branded cards, while merchants and acquiring institutions connect through the network. This distinction explains why Visa’s business model differs from that of a traditional bank or a card issuer.

Visa became a publicly traded company in 2008 after separating from Visa U.S.A. and related organizations. Its large transaction network and asset-light structure have helped it achieve a very high market capitalization. Visa is separate from Mastercard, which developed from a different group of U.S. banks.
