Which part of Operation Downfall was planned to land on southern Kyushu?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the part of Operation Downfall planned to land on southern Kyushu.
Olympic was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945. Its objective was to seize the southern portion of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, and establish airfields and positions for a later advance. Okinawa was intended to serve as a major staging base for the operation.
The planned assault was not intended to conquer all of Kyushu immediately. Allied forces would take the southern area and use it to support the next phase, Operation Coronet. Coronet would target the Kanto Plain near Tokyo on Honshu, Japan’s largest island.
Olympic was never carried out because Japan surrendered in August 1945. The plan is sometimes mistaken for Coronet because both belonged to Downfall and both concerned the Japanese home islands. The easiest distinction is geographic and chronological: Olympic meant southern Kyushu first, while Coronet meant the Tokyo region later.
