The tournament is played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, a tennis complex located inside the large public park. The site replaced the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, which had hosted the championship since 1915. The move gave the event substantially more room for courts, spectators, and modern stadium facilities.

The 1978 edition was the first US Open held at the National Tennis Center and the first played on hardcourts. Jimmy Connors won the men’s singles title, while Chris Evert captured the women’s championship. The complex was originally called the USTA National Tennis Center and was renamed for Billie Jean King in 2006.

The park is also famous for its World’s Fair history. Citi Field and the Queens Museum are nearby, making the US Open part of one of New York City’s best-known recreational and cultural areas.
