Which park by Gaudí was originally designed as a housing development?
Answer
Park Güell
Answer
Park Güell
Park Güell was originally designed as a housing development by Antoni Gaudí and Eusebi Güell.
Industrialist and patron Eusebi Güell envisioned an exclusive residential community on a hillside overlooking Barcelona. Inspired partly by the English garden-city movement, the plan called for roughly 60 plots for luxury homes, connected by landscaped paths, terraces and shared facilities.
The project began in 1900, but its remote location and high prices made it commercially unsuccessful. Only two houses were built on the planned plots, and the development was eventually transformed into a municipal park. Gaudí moved into one of the completed houses in 1906; it is now the Gaudí House Museum.
The park’s surviving architecture includes colorful ceramic mosaics, serpentine benches, stone viaducts and the famous dragon sculpture, El Drac. Construction continued until 1914, and Park Güell opened to the public in 1926. UNESCO recognised it as part of the Works of Antoni Gaudí in 1984.
