Which Paris neighborhood did Marie Curie live in as a student in a rented garret?
Answer
Latin Quarter
Answer
Latin Quarter
Marie Curie lived in a rented garret in Paris’s Latin Quarter while studying at the University of Paris. She moved to Paris in late 1891 and used the neighborhood’s proximity to the university to pursue physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
The Latin Quarter lies on Paris’s Left Bank, largely in the 5th and 6th arrondissements, around the Sorbonne. Its long association with universities and student life made it a natural home for Curie, although her lodging was extremely modest. She studied intensely, tutored in the evenings, and sometimes became so absorbed in her work that she forgot to eat.
This period helped transform Maria Skłodowska, the Polish student who had arrived from Warsaw, into Marie Curie, the scientist who would reshape the study of radioactivity. In 1893 she earned her physics degree and began laboratory work.
The neighborhood is not the same as the Sorbonne itself. The Sorbonne was the university center; the Latin Quarter was the surrounding student district where Curie rented her garret and lived during her early Paris studies.
