Which Paris landmark was completed for the 1889 World's Fair?

The story behind the answer

The Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris for the 1889 World's Fair.

The exposition celebrated the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, and the tower served as the entrance arch to the fairgrounds. Its exposed iron structure was intended to demonstrate France's industrial and engineering capabilities.

Construction began in January 1887 and finished in March 1889, remarkably quickly for a structure of its size. The tower was named after Gustave Eiffel's engineering company, although the design work was carried out by engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, with architect Stephen Sauvestre contributing architectural details.

Many visitors initially disliked its appearance, and the tower was planned to stand for only 20 years. Its usefulness as a radio and communications structure helped preserve it. Today, it is one of the world's most recognizable landmarks and a defining symbol of Paris.
