Georges Petit hosted Claude Monet and Auguste Rodin’s joint exhibition in Paris in 1889.
Petit was a prominent Parisian art dealer and gallery owner who organized influential exhibitions for modern French artists. His gallery provided an important commercial and public platform during a period when Impressionist painting was gaining wider acceptance.
The 1889 exhibition paired Monet’s landscapes with Rodin’s sculpture. The combination helped present both artists as major contemporary figures and demonstrated how a commercial gallery could shape reputations beyond the official Salon system.
Georges Petit is often confused with Paul Durand-Ruel, another crucial dealer who strongly supported Monet and many Impressionists. Durand-Ruel’s role was extensive, but Petit was the dealer associated with the 1889 Monet–Rodin exhibition.
