Answer
John Constable
Which painter is famous for “The Hay Wain”? John Constable painted it.
Completed in 1821, The Hay Wain is an oil painting showing a horse-drawn wagon in the River Stour near Flatford Mill, on the border of Suffolk and Essex. Constable based the scene on the English countryside around his childhood home, an area now popularly called “Constable Country.” Willy Lott’s Cottage appears on the left.
The painting was originally exhibited at London’s Royal Academy under the title Landscape: Noon. It did not sell there, but its reception changed dramatically in France. At the 1824 Paris Salon, it won a gold medal from King Charles X and influenced artists including Eugène Delacroix.
The Hay Wain is one of Constable’s large “six-footers,” ambitious landscapes made for public exhibition. Despite its present fame, Constable struggled financially and achieved greater commercial success in France than in Britain. The painting entered the National Gallery in London in 1886.
