Which Pacific island country was among the first to enter the New Year after moving the International Date Line in 1995?

The story behind the answer

Kiribati was among the first countries to enter the New Year after moving the International Date Line in 1995.

Kiribati shifted the date-line arrangement around its eastern islands in 1995 so that all of its territory would share the same calendar day. The change placed the Line Islands, including Kiritimati, on the west side of the line for civil timekeeping.

Kiritimati is therefore widely described as one of the first inhabited places to welcome a new calendar year. The country’s unusual position results from political and practical choices about time zones, not from Earth spinning faster in that region.

The International Date Line is an agreed convention near 180 degrees longitude, not a perfectly straight physical boundary. It bends around national territories and island groups. Tonga, Samoa, and other Pacific locations also celebrate early, but Kiribati’s 1995 adjustment is the key fact behind its prominent New Year status.
